Our son, who is almost 9, and our daughter, who is almost 7, have been sharing a bedroom their whole lives, and they like it...most of the time. They like having someone else to fall asleep with, to talk & giggle with, to be mad at mom with, to jump from bed to bed with.
Now, we are moving our 2 year old son in to join them. The most exciting part of this, for all of them, is they get to design how this space will look.
As they surfed the web and flipped through magazines for design ideas, they noticed that most shared bedrooms are for either brothers or sisters; not both. What shared boy/girl rooms they did find fell into two distinct categories:
1) bedrooms that were split down the middle:
1) to personalize their own sleeping areas but still design their room together as one room
2) to design their individual space around some of their favorite things and some images they found that they did like.
3) to pick paint colors they each like and then decide on a few colors that they agreed on together.
The design boards below are a combination of my sketches and cutouts of images they choose to create their own individualized spaces within their shared space.
