Since being challenged with firewood storage & access in our own, I make sure to bring these issues up with clients once they tell me they want to heat with a wood stove. For each client the solution is different. In the 'Reinvented Farmhouse' which was recently completed, the solution was a tall, open wood box that was built on one side of a window seat balanced out by a builtin on the other side of the window seat. And similar to our design, a 'hidden' door was built into the exterior wall so that the wood box could be filled from both the outside or the inside of the house.
I found this door latch from Vintage Trailer Supply; It is one that has been used on many canned ham trailers starting in the 1940s. It allows the door to be closed tightly from both the inside or the outside.
